Search Engine Marketing
Google, Microsoft and Yahoo! each have their own form of search engine ads. These ads show up above and to the right of the search results in most cases, under the heading "Sponsored Links." If you're already familiar with this form of advertising, you may know it better as "Google Adwords," "Microsoft adCenter," and "Yahoo! Search Marketing."
How it all works
Advertisers bid for page position against their competitors for specific keywords, such as "SUV." Search engines look at two factors to determine page placement: 1. Bid amount, and 2. Click-through rate. Click-through rate is the amount of clicks an ad gets compared with the amount of display has gotten. An ad that is rarely displayed, but frequently clicked would have a high click-through rate. Search engines give preference to ads that are more often clicked because it increases their opportunities for revenue (obviously, seldom-clicked ads generate less revenue than frequently clicked ads).
Payment. How much you pay is determined by your bid, multiplied by the number of clicks your ad receives. Note: You will often be charged less than your maximum bid for a click, but never more.
Filtering Methods. Every click costs money, so we'll make sure that your ads are targeted and and we'll work to screen out misclicks (people who click on your ad, but aren't looking for goods or services that you offer).
- Negative Keywords. Screen out unrelated or low-quality searches by setting certain words and phrases to cause your ad not to appear.
- Geo Targeting. Make sure your ads only run in the area where you do business.

Other Search Engine Ads. Your AdWords ads can easily be configured to cover Google's search partners, including Ask.com and AOL.
